And the European Jiu-Jitsu Championship is rolling! After kicking off on Monday with the white belt contests, this Tuesday the gargantuan event hosted the blue-belts in Odivelas, Portugal.
In the men’s section, a ferocious Helder “Tropeço” Junior, representing Qatar BJJ, took double gold. An ultra-heavyweight, Helder achieved submissions in all four of his matches in his weight division, including the final one, versus João da Silva (Atos). Helder then had to face the dangerous Uanderson Oliveira (Carlson Gracie), a middleweight fighter who had already beaten an ultra-heavyweight to reach the final. Helder won again for a double gold run.
Erin Quillen (Checkmat) had left California dreaming of a gold medal in Europe. Her two finals were against Maria Birolli (Atos) in the super-heavy division and Gina Breiteryte (Checkmat) in the open. Erin won both, making it a double gold campaign of her own.
