As well as the black-belts that set the mats on fire last weekend in Long Beach, the 2019 IBJJF Worlds featured the legends of tomorrow.
And the brown-belts left nothing to be desired, with two names standing above the rest by the end.
Among the men, Victor Hugo of Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu extended his great phase. As well as the gold medal he won at ultra-heavy, he took down the absolute division. Thus he has claimed the 2018/2019 IBJJF Grand Slam, with eight titles across the Euro, Pan, Brazilian Nationals and Worlds.
Yara Soares (Lloyd Irvin/Guigo JJ) had a setback in the super-heavy final, losing to Gabrieli Pessanha, but then got her revenge in the absolute final.
Also standing out at brown were Jonnatas Gracie (Atos), the lightweight champion, as well as the aforementioned Gabi Pessanha, who returns home to Brazil with gold, silver and the brand-new black belt given to her by Infight’s Márcio de Deus.
